Workshops

June 4-29, 2018
"15 Works"
24 Pearl Street Online Writing Program
This four week poetry workshop is based on a class taught at the former Corcoran School of Art. In "15 Works," you’ll write 3 to 4 poems a week in response to assignments and prompts, with weekly themes. Comments on one another’s poems will be limited to one poem per week unless you’d like to comment on more. The workshop promises to stretch the boundaries of your imagination, silence your internal editor and help you establish a writing routine. Students who have completed similar types of “extreme” generative workshops find that exhaustion allows them to be open, quick, and intuitive. Many of your poems will be silly, terrible, unfinished and sloppy. Many will be terrific drafts. This workshop will change your writing habits.  Register here.

Spring 2017

"Almost Certainly But Not Quite Right At All"
24 Pearl Street Online Writing Program

4-Week Workshop. Perhaps you have a poem you can’t get off the ground, a poem that bugs you, annoys you, drives you mad because you can’t figure out how to revise it. This 4-week workshop explores ways to begin revising poems that have been driving you crazy for months or for years. To get unstuck, I’ll provide exercises and generous comments on one poem per week. Your peers will also provide suggestions, some of which are based on a series of questions I’ve provided. This class is a fast-paced workshop designed to jump-start your revision process. The only pre-requisite is a desire to change your poems.  Register here.

To Be Moved and To Move
TBA
24 Pearl Street Online Writing Program

How can we write personal poems without sounding sentimental or self-serving? Experimenting with a dynamic mixture of time, images and phrases, this eight-week studio will help you create new poems that express a deeper personal story and “move” your readers emotionally in unexpected, unconventional ways.

I loved working with Nancy on my poetry manuscript. She delivered her detailed and thoughtful analysis in an amazingly short amount of time. She provided suggestions for improvement with concrete examples in a supportive and clear way, as well as completing a thorough line editing. Our follow up phone call was both enlightening and entertaining. Her insights helped me to understand what exactly I need to do to get my poetry to the next level. I highly recommend working with Nancy.  Beth Lowell
